British holidaymakers who stayed at the Holiday Village Hotel in Benalmadena, Spain in May 2014 have reported outbreaks of illness.
Many have commented on the hotel review website TripAdvisor after suffering gastric illness at the hotel. Holidaymakers have criticised the standards of hygiene and food preparation after falling ill at the Holiday Village.
Holidaymakers have experienced symptoms including sickness, stomach cramps, and diarrhoea, reporting that many others at the hotel were also suffering from a sickness bug.
A holidaymaker from Salisbury commented: âCurrently staying here with my mum, my 4 year old and 18 month old son. After being here 24 hours they are both vomiting really badly.
âAfter reading the other recent reviews my suspicions are confirmed and there is certainly a sickness bug going round. I had to get the doctor out (90 euros) and then a trip to the chemist to get them both medicine as prescribed.â
In response to the review, a manager at the Holiday Village stated, âWe are sorry to hear that you were ill during your stay at the hotel.
âThe norovirus is present at this time of year, and at the Holiday Village we take all possible steps to minimize the risk of it spreading further, by following strict hygiene procedures put in place throughout all of our hotels.â
The Holiday Village in Benalmadena is promoted by UK tour operator, First Choice. Â Recently, First Choice paid out £1.7million after almost 600 guests at their Holiday Village in Sarigerme, Turkey took legal action against them in respect of gastric illnesses suffered.
Visitors to the Holiday Village in Benalmadena have raised serious complaints about the cleanliness of restaurants.
A recent hotel guest stated: âJust stayed in this hotel with family and friends (twenty five people). Eight of us were violently sick and some had diarrhoea.
âThe plates and cutlery were caked with old food, we had to search for clean ones which were hard to find.â
Another visitor to the hotel from Stirlingshire added: âThe plates and cutlery were always dirty with old food crusted on them. My husband was violently sick (brought up blood) for 36 hours and I had stomach cramps and severe diarrhoea.
âThe person cooking raw meat was using the same hands to handle raw and cooked meat and then handling pastries and cracking eggs.
âWe couldnt face eating there the last few days so we ate out. We spoke to the rep and he said they had numerous complaints about plates and was having an urgent meeting with the hotel manager.â
