We are concerned to read about the increasing number of complaints made by British holidaymakers who have had their holidays ruined by illness whilst on holiday at the Oriental Resort in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt.
Sharm el Sheikh remains a popular holiday destination amongst British tourists, despite many holiday makers contracting illnesses whilst on holiday there.
A gentleman from Preston who has recently returned after an 11 day holiday complained on TripAdvisor: âI have just returned home from the Oriental Resort where we spent an 11 day family holiday.
âThe holiday started well. When we arrived, we found 2 beautiful rooms waiting for us with amazing views overlooking the quiet pool. Everything seemed perfect, so we started to look forward to a great holiday ahead.
âThe first day was fine, hot, sunny and loads to do, everything was great, then on the third day, it all changed.
âMy brother felt unwell and spent the day in bed with sickness and diarrhoea.
âThe next day he did feel better but the sickness had moved on to his wife who then spent the next 2 days in bed, feeling so bad she had to have 2 visits from the hotel doctor and a doctors bill for £130. After treatment she felt better and we carried on with our holiday hoping all was now well, it wasnt, 2 days later it was my turn, stomach pain, sickness, and diarrhoea, I had it all.
âIt lasted for the rest of our holiday, I was so glad to go home, over a stone lighter than when I had arrived, and completely drained, the only reason we could see that could cause this problem is the restaurant.â
Another lady from Leeds complained: âHad a dickey stomach every day. The food was very basic with no variety. Never an hour went by without being pestered.
âSo many flies, this could be due to not getting rid of the waste properly? The room we were in stunk of smoke. Sheets didnt get changed, only towels. The bathroom was disgusting, mould and dirt all in the grout.
âThe bath had a hole in which was filled with filler. Definitely not a 4-5* hotel. Think twice before you book this hotel. I rarely write reviews but Ive never had a holiday where I have wanted to come home after just a few daysâ
Tracy Stansfield, a holiday illness claims solicitor at Your Holiday Claims comments: âIt is awful when people have a hard earned holiday ruined due to their contracting an illness which, in all probability could have been prevented.
âUnfortunately, in hotels abroad, particularly in all-inclusive hotels, illnesses, such as food poisoning  which can be commonly caused by poor food and hygiene practices, can easily be contracted.
âThe Package Travel Regulations 1992 permit holiday makers to bring claims directly against their tour operator. They can claim compensation if they contract a holiday illness abroad and I strongly recommend anyone who has been ill during their stay at the Oriental Resort in Sharm el Sheikh to contact me to discuss a claim for compensation.
âWe can help people to successfully claim compensation against their tour operator. We would not advise holidaymakers to contact their tour operator directly, as this could lead to under settlement or the acceptance of vouchers in lieu of damages. Â They need to obtain appropriate independent legal advice and guidance to ensure that they are properly compensated.
âWe handle the majority of claims on a no win, no fee basis and have secured thousands of pounds in compensation for holidaymakers who have had a holiday in Egypt ruined by illnessâ.
