Sickness and poor hygiene on board the TUI Discovery

Despite only becoming part of the TUI brand in summer 2016, the TUI Discovery has faced wave after wave of sickness complaints with guests who sailed as recently as December 2016 warning of poor hygiene practices.

An angry Twitter user bluntly comments, “never again Thomson cruise #TUIdiscovery Dont do it 2 days sick food dreadful.”

Similarly disparaging reports can be found on review site Cruise Critic as passengers voice their concerns after being served undercooked chicken and “not very warm” food.

Enforcement of hand gel use is also reported as lax with further concerns raised regarding the cleaning of tables.

According to one holidaymaker, “staff [are] going from table to table wiping them and chairs using the same cloth (never saw any bacterial sprays used) not aware whether said cloths changed or washed.”

Reports of guests falling ill and receiving medical treatment for chest infections, thought to be caused by malfunctioning air conditioning, can also be found online.

The legal experts at Your Holiday Claims know only too well that any lapse in hygiene standards can quickly lead to an outbreak of illness on board cruise ships, having successfully settled both group actions and individual claims for holidaymakers struck by sickness at sea.

Experienced solicitor Tracy Stansfield secured a staggering total compensation payout of £42,500 for 26 holidaymakers after repeat outbreaks of norovirus left them suffering severe gastric symptoms on board Fred Olsens Boudicca liner.

Commenting on the reports of illness on board TUI Discovery, Tracy said: “It appears that there are a number of issues which require immediate attention on board this ship.

“Tour operators have a duty of care to ensure that guests receive only the highest standards of hygiene, health and safety. If they are lacking in this duty, then a claim for compensation can be made from right here in the UK.

“I would encourage anyone who has been unfortunate enough to fall sick on board the TUI Discovery within the last three years to come forward and contact Your Holiday Claims for advice on the merits of pursuing a no win no fee claim. You are only a phone call or click away from expert legal advice.”
