£3,000 compensation for holidaymaker who contracted cryptosporidium at Hotel Riviera

YourHolidayClaims has recently recovered £3,000 in compensation for a couple whose Tunisian break was ruined by cryptosporidium at Hotel Riviera.

Christine Niven, from Walsall, stayed at the Hotel Riviera in Port El Kantaoui, Tunisia with her husband to celebrate their 43rd wedding anniversary, but their romantic getaway soon became a nightmare when they fell ill suffering from symptoms including diarrhoea, stomach pains, nausea, and vomiting.

Wedding anniversary ruined by sickness at Thomas Cook promoted Hotel Riveria, Tunisia

The couple travelled to the hotel in April 2013 having booked through the tour operator Thomas Cook and quickly found that the hygiene standards at the Hotel Riviera were not as expected. Mr and Mrs Niven also reported to YourHolidayClaims that much of the food at the hotel was served on more than one occasion.

During their stay Mrs Niven contracted cryptosporidiosis, which is caused by the parasite cryptosporidium infecting the bowels.  The most common symptoms of Cryptosporidiosis are diarrhoea, stomach pains and sickness, all of which were experienced by Mrs Niven.

The Cryptosporidium parasite is often found in soil, water, food, or on unclean surfaces that have been contaminated with infected faeces. The most common method of transmission however is water i.e. drinking water or recreational (swimming pool) water. You can find out how we help holidaymakers make a successful crytosporidium claim here.

In this case, Mr and Mrs Niven had only been drinking bottled water, however many alcoholic drinks sold within the hotel did appear to be watered down.

Christine Niven said of their holiday illness, “The illness that I suffered truly did ruin our holiday. It is a horrible experience to go through on what should have been such a special occasion.

“Many of the drinks at the hotel seemed to be watered down and the indoor pool smelt strongly of sewage, which permeated the lift and first floor corridor where we were staying.

“We would like to thank Anne for all of her work and support in helping us settle the claim”.

Anne Thomson, Head of Travel at YourHolidayClaims, said of the case, “When British holidaymakers are exposed to cryptosporidium, this does leave them in serious danger of falling ill on holiday.

“Water supplies that have been contaminated with cryptosporidium oocysts can often cause quite severe illness, which is why it is always recommended that holidaymakers drink only bottled water and avoid ice in drinks. However, there is also a responsibility on the part of the hotel management to ensure that their guests are not exposed to contaminated water through drinks served at the hotel and that swimming pools are properly maintained”.
