Thanks to YourHolidayClaims, a family of three from Rochdale have successfully recovered £15,850 in a settlement with Thomson after an outbreak of salmonella food poisoning at Jaz Mirabel Beach led to lasting health issues.
Sarah Whittle booked a mid-August 2014 stay at the all-inclusive Jaz Mirabel Beach eager to enjoy a fun-filled family break with her husband and daughter.
Boasting five-stars, a private beach, 6 swimming pools and no fewer than 5 restaurants, the Jaz Mirabel Beach is described by tour operator Thomson as “palatial.”
Unfortunately, for the ill-fated Whittle family, they found the facilities on offer to be pitiful and far from fit for a king as promised.
Speaking to YourHolidayClaims, mother Sarah catalogues an appalling list of hygiene failings at the resort and expresses great disgust that food was left out for prolonged periods of time and served at cold or lukewarm temperatures.
Her husband agrees that the food on offer was of substandard quality and notes that “bread, salad, cheese and meat were always left uncovered” despite flies clearly being visible in the food areas. “The outside snack bar was next to a stream and water feature so flies would swarm in this area and birds were common too”, he adds.
Sarah’s husband was the first of the trio to succumb to illness, experiencing painful stomach cramps, vomiting, diarrhoea and nausea just three days into the much anticipated family holiday.
The stricken holidaymaker contacted numerous members of hotel staff to make them aware of his condition only to be met with condescension. “Staff just said it was sunstroke and sent me away, telling me to drink plenty”, he states.
However, it soon became clear that the hotel was in fact in the midst of a food poisoning outbreak as in the following days both Sarah and Amy began to experience the same crippling illness symptoms along with a number of their fellow holidaymakers.
With their holiday in ruins, the Rochdale family were “desperate to go home” and claim that medication obtained in the resort did nothing to ease their distress.
Little did the Whittles know that this was just the beginning of their illness ordeal.
After enduring a particularly unpleasant flight home, the afflicted family sought medical treatment from their local accident and emergency department and it was confirmed that they had suffered symptoms of salmonella on holiday.
Although mother Sarah was able to return to her pre-holiday state of health in just over a month, both her husband and daughter are still battling lasting complications having developed an intolerance to certain foods and post-infectious irritable bowel syndrome respectively.
