A couple who travelled to Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt has been awarded £5,000 having suffered symptoms of gastroenteritis.
Cristian Magana Salgueiro and his partner Mark Trevelyan booked a holiday to celebrate the completion of Cristians Bachelor degree.
Just days into their holiday at the Oriental Resort in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, both were struck down with severe stomach cramps, nausea and diarrhoea.
Gastroenteritis ruins Thomas Cook holiday in Sharm El Sheikh
The couple booked their two week break in July 2013 through tour operator Thomas Cook. Five days in to the holiday Mr Magana Salgueiro began to experience “severe diarrhoea up to 12 times a day stomach cramps and inflammation of the abdomen”.
Mr Trevelyan also suffered severe cramps and severe diarrhoea, nausea, sickness and he complained of exhaustion.
Upon arrival home both sought advice from their GP. They were asked not to attend their doctor’s surgery in the event that they may be contagious. Traveller’s diarrhoea was diagnosed and antibiotics were prescribed.
Mr Magana Salgueiro did not fully recover until mid-September 2013. Mr Trevelyan’s gastric problems continued for longer. He was “still not 100%” by August 2014 although thankfully the ongoing symptoms were slowly improving.
Mr Trevelyan witnessed “birds on the terrace eating from the pasta station and plates, as well as cockroaches swarming a designated food area”.
Our Head of Travel Law comments on the successful case

“High standards of hygiene in holiday hotels are vital or outbreaks of illness will continue to arise and more holidays ruined. We have recently been contacted by more holidaymakers who unfortunately suffered similar symptoms of gastric illness at Oriental Resort.”
Cristian Magana Salgueiro commented on the success of his claim “I am very happy with the outcome of my claim, I can’t thank Anne enough for all her help.”
