£4,000 compensation for Shigella stricken holidaymaker

Your Holiday Claims have helped a Worcester man receive £4,000 in compensation after a shigella infection contracted at the Aqua Fun Club, Marrakech, lead to 6 months of misery.

Paul Davies and his partner Tracy Bailey booked a 7-night stay at the Aqua Fun Club, Marrakech to celebrate a milestone birthday.

The couple had high hopes for their May 2015 trip and hoped that the three-star hotel would provide the perfect backdrop for Paul’s 50th birthday celebrations.

However, soon after their arrival at the hotel, the couple could not help but feel deflated by the standard of service on offer.

Paul vividly recalls a shocking number of hygiene breaches at the First Choice promoted hotel.

He describes mealtimes at the resort as “horrendous”.

“Children were running around dropping food on the floor … tables were left uncleared and there was never any clean cutlery,” he states.

“Cats, kittens, birds and masses of flies would roam the restaurant area,” he continues.

Paul also recalls with horror that the swimming pool “had lots of dead insects even after the pool filters were cleaned.” Alarmingly, he also asserts that he “never saw any chemical cleaning” of the pool despite the fact that the resort houses Morocco’s biggest water park.

After enduring their 7-night stay at the Aqua Fun Club, Paul began to feel unwell on the journey home, believing that he may be starting with a cold.

However, the next day Paul became seriously unwell with stomach cramps, nausea, a hot and cold fever and diarrhoea.

Upon examination by his GP, Paul tested positive for shigella – a highly contagious bacterium that is spread through contaminated water or food and via person to person contact.

The effects of the shigella infection continued to plague Paul for a further six months and left him unable to enjoy a number of foods. “Whenever I would eat anything spicy, I would immediately become bloated and the diarrhoea return,” he states.

YHC Successfully Claim £4,000 from First Choice

Paul decided to take legal action against his tour operator, First Choice, and appointed industry leaders Your Holiday Claims to handle his case.

Acting on a no win, no fee basis, specialist holiday claim solicitor Sue Robinson secured £4,000 in compensation for Paul.

“I am extremely grateful to Sue Robinson and the expert team at Your Holiday Claims,” Paul said.

“My 50th birthday getaway has proved memorable for all the wrong reasons. I cannot thank Sue enough for her hard work and dedication. She was always on hand to answer any questions I had and I am overjoyed to have received £4,000 in compensation,” he continued.

Sue commented: “I am happy that I have been able to assist Paul after he contracted a severe case of shigellosis at the Aqua Fun Club, Marrakech.

“I find it incredibly worrying that British holidaymakers suffer serious illness on holiday due to failings in hygiene standards by the tour operator. In 2014, Your Holiday Claims represented a number of guests from the Aqua Fun Club Marrakech who fell ill with salmonella.

“I sincerely hope that the tour operators have addressed the underlying hygiene issues at this hotel.

“I strongly urge anyone who has suffered from illness at the Aqua Fun Park within the last 3 years to contact Holiday Illness Claims today and start a no win, no fee claim for compensation.”
