A couple who travelled to the Grand Bahia Principe for their 30th wedding anniversary and 50th Birthday celebration described their £3,000 holiday that was meant to be a holiday of a lifetime that will be remembered for all the wrong reasons.
Sadly, the couple ended up hospitalised due to contracting gastroenteritis.
Diane from Fife said on TripAdvisor âThe hotel is supposed to be 5 stars Im sorry it would struggle to get 3 from me.
âOn the 2nd day we went to the beach and at lunchtime we went into the BBQ beach restaurant for a drink of water so we took a drink from one of the water machines, we drank one cup and on the second half way down noticed floaters in the bottom like algae by that time it was too late wed drank more than one.
âWe did inform the rep about this and one of the members of staff at our reception.
âThe next day I started to have a terribly upset stomach and diarrhoea and my husband wasnt much better. The diarrhoea continued throughout the rest of the week we tried going into the pharmacy for medication to stop it but they didnt have any so that has to tell a story.
âBy the next Tuesday I was so ill I went to the Doctor in the complex who said I was very dehydrated and referred me to the hospital as my blood pressure was so low and my pulse was very fast, the hospital was a scary experience the put me on IV fluids and medicines and took blood tests but the wanted me to stay in as I had a bad case of gastroenteritis.â
Diane and her husband were amongst the many who were reported to have recently been ill during their stay.
âThe diarrhoea continued the rest of the holiday I can safely say it is the worst holiday I have ever been on and I know speaking to a good few people we were not the only ones who were illâ she added.
Anne Thomson, Head of Travel Law at Your Holiday Claims, commented: âI am deeply saddened to hear peoples holidays have been ruined by what appears to be as a result of poor hygiene standards.
âI sincerely hope the tour operators, Thomas Cook and First Choice, take matters seriously and carry out a full investigation into the cause of the illness outbreak. They need to resolve matters as soon as possible to prevent the situation from escalating.
