Sickness ruins holidays at Stella Makadi Gardens in Egypt

Your Holiday Claims have been instructed by holidaymakers who suffered gastric illnesses at the Stella Makadi Gardens in Makadi Bay, Egypt in April 2014.

The resort is a complex of hotels promoted by Thomas Cook. It includes the beachfront Stella Makadi Resort and Spa and the Stella Makadi Gardens.

The holidaymakers contacted us after falling ill during the second week of their stay at the Stella Makadi Gardens. They reported suffering symptoms including sickness and diarrhoea at the resort. Even as they travelled home they were still affected by the illness.

Holidaymakers have raised complaints regarding the hygiene standards at the Stella Makadi Gardens through the hotel review website TripAdvisor. Guests have reported witnessing flies swarming around food in the buffet restaurants and ants infesting hotel rooms.

A visitor to the hotel from Bognor Regis commented: “On finally entering the room (ground floor) it was running with ants (very large ants). The bellboy assured us this was nothing to worry about…we demanded to be moved to a higher floor.

“The restaurant in the Gardens is quite an experience. Watch out for lots of flies over the salad bar.”

Others have reported entering the restaurant for the first time only to find “dirty crockery” left on tables and “cold” food served.

One British holidaymaker described restaurant conditions at the Stella Makadi Gardens as a “shambles”. They added: “No tables laid, other tables with used plates, food leftovers etc.”

“When flies or other insects land on uncovered food, the food can become contaminated with bacteria.  Holidaymakers are at huge risk of contracting the bacteria and suffering illness.
