Russian threats to ban holidays in Turkey

According to the BBC News from Elsewhere Website, Russias consumer watchdog is said to be threatening to ban holidays in Turkey – because of a tummy bug.

Many Russian Tourists Suffer Holiday Illness In Turkey

Russias consumer rights protection organisation, which recently caused a stir over its ban on Ukranian confectionary, is now threatening to halt the sale of holidays to Turkey over allegations that stomach bug cases are widespread in resorts frequented by millions of Russian tourists.

The government watchdog announced that it was “monitoring the situation” after what is called a “mass-poisoning” of Russian holidaymakers at two resorts in Turkey left dozens of people ill.  It said that it would issue a travel ban on its citizens if the situation worsened, and might even order an evacuation if appropriate, the Interfax news agency said.

The situation has led to a war of words between Moscows chief public health officer Gennadiy Onishchenko and Russias Association of Tour Operators, after he accused holiday companies of sending Russians to resorts without telling them there was a “risk of disease”. According to the Moscow Times, over 3.3 million Russian tourists visited Turkey in 2012, and figures have not been dented by recent political unrest.

What Should You Do After Enduring Sickness On Vacation?

Our Team of Specialist Holiday Illness Solicitors has dealt with hundreds of cases of holiday illness in package holiday hotels throughout the world, including those in Turkey, Egypt, the Dominican Republic and Tunisia.

If you are worried about previous illness outbreaks in a hotel you are planning to book for a holiday, ask your tour operator if there have been any problems relating to food or hygiene. Also check out TripAdvisor where holidaymakers post their own reviews of package holiday hotels.

Anne Thomson, who is Head of the Holiday Illness Compensation Department at Your Holiday Claims, a division of Farnworth Rose solicitors, said: “Holidaymakers should never be exposed to food poisoning or similar types of illness in package holiday hotels and the 1992 Package Tour Regulations mean that anyone who is ill in this type of hotel through no fault of their own can claim compensation from the tour operator.
