A group of British holidaymakers have told the Daily Mail of their 3 year battle with illness following a disastrous holiday to Dreams Punta Cana Resort and Spa, in September 2012.
Dirk Ord, a retired firefighter from Northumberland, looked forward to a dream holiday with his family and friends when 9 out of 10 of the party were struck down with severe gastric illness.
Among the party were husband and wife Stephen and Susan Robson who had high hopes of celebrating their first wedding anniversary in style in the Caribbean with their friends.
After becoming increasingly unwell with symptoms of âvomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, chills and feverâ both Mr Ord and Mrs Robson were admitted to hospital and spent 2 days on a drip.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Mr Ord said: âAt one point I was so ill I didnt think Id make it through, it was scary.
Mrs Ords son, Owen, aged 9, also suffered severely with illness at the resort and was reportedly âso traumatised he has developed a phobia of using the toiletâ.
The sickness struck holidaymakers told the Daily Mail that âfood was left uncovered and exposed to flies and fresh food mixed with old food at the buffetâ.
Mr Robson, Mr Ord and his son Owen now claim that 3 years on they still suffer from irritable bowel syndrome and have become intolerant to many foods they used to enjoy.
Mr Ord commented: âIve had to change my life. I cant have a Chinese meal or anything spicy. Owen has been mentally affected by what has happened. Hes forever washing his hands.
The Dreams Resort and Spa has now totalled over 600 poor and terrible reviews on review website TripAdvisor from droves of unhappy holidaymakers.
Anne Thomson, Head of Travel Law at Your Holiday Claims, commented: âSlipping safety standards at busy all-inclusive hotels, including food left uncovered, can very quickly lead to widespread illness.
âIt is important that tour operators take their responsibility for guest welfare very seriously and I would encourage any holidaymakers who have suffered similar ill-fated holidays to seek legal help.â
