Complaints dating back as far as 2006 from British holidaymakers who have had their holidays ruined as a result of poor food and hygiene standards at the Hotel Riviera hotel, Tunisia continue to be reported on TripAdvisor.
Anne Thomson, Head of Travel Law at Your Holiday Claims said: âWe are concerned about the growing number of complaints that have been made against this hotel.
âOne lady who returned from her holiday in November 2013 has turned to us for help to pursue a claim for compensation due to having contracted salmonella, suspected to have been caused due to the poor standard of food.
âWe also are concerned many more people may have been affected.
âDespite the numerous complaints that have been made about this hotel and the alleged poor standards of food, hygiene and bad experiences with staff, I hope the tour operators who sell and promote holiday packages to the Riviera Hotel treat the recent outbreak of illness seriously and seek to resolve matters as soon possible to prevent others from becoming ill.
âThe owners, managers, staff and tour operators are all responsible for the health and safety in hotels abroad and all have a duty of care to maintain the highest standards of food and hygiene.
âFailure to comply with these, can lead to outbreaks of illness and in severe cases, people may become hospitalisedâ.
âDo not stay hereâ, âAwfulâ, âDumpâ and also being described as a âhuge let downâ are amongst some of the most recent comments that have been posted onto TripAdvisor in recent months.
A lady from Greater Manchester who returned to the UK in November 2013 after her stay in October said: âWe arrived at the hotel on Sunday 20th October and within 24hours we had moved out into the hotel next door.
âIt is absolutely filthy. Glasses in the restaurant are cloudy, the cutlery is dirty, and the highchairs are disgusting. The pool side has cracked tiles, overgrown grass, and the ramps that can be used for buggies or for the disabled are hazardous. The metal strips on the ramp are coming offâ
A gentlemen who stayed at the Riviera hotel in November 2013 also said: âGreat service, fantastic food, brilliant atmosphere⦠If these are the things that you look for in a holiday then the Hotel Riviera is not for you. The staff are rude (until the end of your holiday when they want a tip) the food is awful with no variation from day to day. We spoke to people who have stayed 5 times before and loved it but even they said they wont come back again. The hotel has no doubt seen better days and I can excuse the shabby rooms but there is no excuse for the rude staff, it costs nothing to smile. Would I come back here? Not in this life time.â
