At Your Holiday Claims we have recently received an enquiry from a holidaymaker who, together with her friend, fell ill during their stay at the Grand Hotel during the first week in June.
The holiday was booked through the specialist tour operator Red Sea Holidays.
We are informed that many holidaymakers have reported experiencing symptoms including sickness, stomach cramps, and diarrhoea. Visitors to the hotel have taken to the review website TripAdvisor to comment on the illness they suffered.
A couple from Cardiff found their Egyptian honeymoon in ruins after losing three days of their holiday due to illness.
They commented: âWe both had sickness and diarrhoea which Im convinced was caused by the food. Been home nearly a week and Im still ill.
âThis was our honeymoon and it was meant to be special but we lost three days due to illness. I would not return.â
Another holidaymaker also complained on TripAdvisor that the illness they contracted continued to affect them on their return home.
They said: âThe food was terrible. The food that was edible (or so we thought) was not served at the correct temperature and was often cold or just warm.
âThis resulted in four of our party suffering from bad tummies which we had to get treatment for. This continued for two weeks after we arrived home and we were unable to eat hot food without having stomach cramps.â
Others have also complained of missing out on large parts of their holiday as a result of suffering an illness.
A holidaymaker from Harlow stated: âHaving travelled to Egypt before we were prepared, but not for the serious illness that we all experienced. Four of the seven days were wiped out and now home we are all struggling with continued stomach issues.
âThe hotel and pharmacist on site insist it is the weather and normal for Egypt but then they try to give you antibiotics which are used to fight bugs. We tried all the preparations bought from England and ended up spending a small fortune at the hotel pharmacy just to try and get my husband fit to fly.
âAll the guests we spoke to were ill. It is not normal under any circumstances to be unable to leave your room leave your hotel room for days and days on end.
âThis needs reviewing Red Sea Holidays by health and safety. A ruined week in paradise.â
Anne Thomson, Head of Travel Law at Your Holiday Claims, said of the outbreak: âThe enquiry that we have received, together with the other reported cases of illness at the Grand Hotel, do raise concerns.
âWe have read numerous reports online of holidaymakers requiring medical treatment and spending days of their holiday confined within their hotel rooms. This not only ruins a holiday, but can also lead to incurring costly out of pocket medical expenses.
âWe would urge anyone who has fallen ill at The Grand Hotel in Sharm el Sheikh to contact us as soon as possible for advice on the merits of making a claim for compensation.â
