At Your Holiday Claims we have recently received an enquiry from a British holidaymaker who contracted campylobacter on holiday in Portugal.
They had travelled to the Alvor Baia Hotel Apartamento to enjoy a family holiday, yet their stay was ruined by sickness, diarrhoea, and stomach cramps.
Due to the severity of the illness, the holidaymaker was forced to see a doctor on their return to the UK.
Recent visitors to the hotel have reported being served food which appeared to be undercooked and poorly prepared.
One hotel guest commented on TripAdvisor that âfood that is supposed to be hot is always lukewarm or coldâ.
Others reported that they would âworry about the bacteria growing on the foodâ.
Anne Thomson, Head of Travel Law at Your Holiday Claims, commented: âIt is very concerning to read of holidaymakers contracting campylobacter on holiday.â
âCampylobacter are a group of bacteria that can cause food poisoning. This often leads to a holidaymaker contracting gastroenteritis, which is an inflammation of the stomach or bowels causing symptoms including vomiting and diarrhoea.â
âIt is vital that tour operators and hotel management ensure that high food and hygiene standards are implemented and maintained in order to prevent any further outbreak of infection.â
âI would encourage anyone who has fallen ill on holiday at the Alvor Baia Hotel Apartamento, to contact myself or a member of our holiday claims team for advice on all aspects of the claim process.â
