If youre travelling abroad this half term, falling sick on holiday will most likely be one of the last things on your mind.
However, at Your Holiday Claims we are contacted by hundreds of people every year whose dream holidays were ruined by outbreaks of sickness bugs.
In many cases, tour operators attempt to pass of such holiday sickness bugs as too much sun, change in diet or even over indulgence. Despite this, we regularly speak to holidaymakers who report falling ill after being exposed to poor hygiene standards in package holiday hotels.
Claim for outbreaks of food poisoning abroad
Food poisoning is one of the most common causes of sickness on holiday in all-inclusive hotels.
Undercooked and contaminated food are regularly highlighted by holidaymakers as the cause for widespread outbreaks of sickness in hotels abroad.
This can lead to guests suffering severe symptoms of vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach cramps and dehydration caused by infections including salmonella, E coli and campylobacter.
If your holiday is ruined by symptoms of food poisoning at an all-inclusive package holiday hotel, you could be entitled to bring a claim directly against your tour operator on your return to the UK.
Sickness bugs caused by contaminated water
Most people are now well aware of the recommendation to stick to bottled water when on holiday abroad. However, many holidaymakers are still struck by illnesses caused by contaminated water.
A common cause of these outbreaks is unclean swimming pool water. If the pool water at your hotel looks murky or unclean, it should be avoided.
Holidaymakers who ingest contaminated water can become infected by cryptosporidium, a parasite which causes watery diarrhoea, stomach cramps, vomiting and fever.
What should you do if you suffer a sickness bug abroad?
If youre struck by a sickness bug abroad there are a number of things you should do:
- Seek medical attention, especially if you suffer dehydration
- Ask for receipts for any medical treatment you pay for (you include these in your claim)
- Report your illness to a tour operator representative at your hotel
