A group of four holidaymakers who suffered severe sickness on a cruise ship have been awarded a share of a massive 6-figure settlement.
Dozens of passengers became seriously ill on board the luxury Grand Princess Cruise Liner, which many claimed was a result of poor hygiene.
Many people needed medical help and all suffered diarrhoea, painful stomach cramps and vomiting.
Carnival, which operates the ship has now paid compensation awards to 45 passengers who were ill during cruises in 2010. The total awards add up to over £100,000.
One passenger described how the whole group he was travelling with fell ill and described what should have been the cruise of a lifetime as ´horrific.´ He went on to say his group had ´never been so ill in our lives.´
The holidaymaker also said: âThe legal action was not about the money, more about the way we were treated. When we first got on the cruise there was no mention this had been a problem before. As far as the holiday went we had enjoyed ourselves, but it was spoilt by what happened at the end.â
Many passengers said that ´food was served cold and left uncovered, and the communal areas were dirty.´
Anne Thomson, Head of Travel Law at Farnworth Rose said: âWhen an illness outbreak occurs on a cruise ship, hundreds of people can be affected. There is no excuse for poor hygiene or food standards on a cruise ship. Severe sickness in some cases can be life-changing.
âFood handlers have to adhere to strict health and safety standards but unfortunately when these standards are not met it can result in outbreaks of gastric illness. This can lead to many holidaymakers becoming ill, some so severely ill that they have to be hospitalised.
âAnyone who has become ill with food poisoning, norovirus or any other type of illness on a cruise ship should contact me as soon as possible to discuss a compensation claim.â
