Painful stomach cramps and diarrhoea have been reported at Rixos Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt.

Tour operator Thomas Cook promotes Rixos Sharm El Sheikh and describes the hotel as “impressive”. It is highlighted for its choice of ten restaurants and being located on a private beach.

A TripAdvisor user commented “my partner and I had funny stomachs throughout our stay and I suffered constant stomach pain.” He continues “for the majority of the holiday, I had to be in close proximity to the toilets.”

Another TripAdvisor user claims the “food is not fit to eat.”

Head of Travel Law, Anne Thomson, commented on the case “It is vital that strict food hygiene standards are maintained otherwise there is a risk that holidaymakers will fall ill.”

“We have represented clients who stayed at the Rixos Sharm El Sheikh who unfortunately suffered similarly and were diagnosed as having contracted salmonella infections on their return to the UK.  These cases are indicative of breakdowns in food handling/cooking practices – if food is stored, prepared, cooked and served correctly, salmonella cases would not arise.”
