Reports have been emerging regarding British holidaymakers falling ill whilst staying at the Titanic Palace in Hurghada, Egypt over the Christmas period.
There have been numerous comments on TripAdvisor from British holidaymakers who have suffered illness including severe stomach cramps, sickness and diarrhoea; with one guest reputedly contracting dysentery.
TripAdvisor reviews have commented on the poor quality of food that was on offer at the hotel and the failings in hygiene standards that were witnessed. One British holidaymaker whose child had fallen ill during their visit stated, âThe main problem is the food. Half of the time you dont know what you are eating and there is very little choice.
âWe had to take one of our children to the local hospital as she was sick and had diarrhoea for over 24 hours. The al a carte restaurants are a joke, hardly any choice and it appeared to be just re-heated foodâ.
A man from Spalding stated that members of his travelling party were forced to take time off work as a result of the illness they suffered at the Titanic Palace, commenting, âI spent an entire 24 hours in the room with severe stomach pains.
âOther members of our party had a milder effect but my wife spent the entire week following the holiday off work due to stomach issues. Another member of our party also had to refrain from work for five days following the holiday.
âThis must question the standard of the hygiene at the hotel as none of our party ate outside of the hotelâ.
Another British holidaymaker from Darlington has reported suffering from dysentery saying, âI stayed here for two weeks and in the second week I caught dysentery. It was not very pleasant, the food here is just awful and the quality of the meat is just shockingâ.
Dysentery, which is often contracted as a result of poor hygiene or eating contaminated food, is an infection of the intestines which can cause diarrhoea containing blood or mucus. In addition to suffering from diarrhoea, symptoms can include stomach cramps, nausea and vomiting.
This means that only drinking bottled water, avoiding ice in drinks and avoiding fresh fruit and vegetables that cannot be peeled is vitally important in regions where sanitation may be of a poor standard.
Unfortunately, undercooked or poorly prepared food can leave holidaymakers susceptible to falling ill and possibly contracting diseases such as dysentery.
Tracy Stansfield, an experienced holiday claims solicitor said on the matter, âIt is never acceptable for any holidaymaker to suffer from dysentery during their stay at a hotel.
âReading the reports online from those who have been ill seems to indicate that there are issues with the standards of hygiene at the Titanic Palace in Hurghada, Egypt which need to be addressed.
