Holiday illnesses can occur for a number of reasons â eating undercooked or re-heated food being two of the main causes.
Al fresco dining in all inclusive hotels also leaves food open to the elements and the risk of contamination by birds and flies.
Here are some tips to keep you safe:
- Wash your hands thoroughly and use hand sanitizer especially after handling money.
- Avoid food which is lukewarm â lukewarm food is a breeding ground for bacteria such as salmonella.
- Also avoid food which has been left standing too long, is uncovered or exposed to contamination by flies and birds or is undercooked.
- In all inclusive hotels you may from time to time find that food is often re-served. Ensure this food has been thoroughly re-heated.
The most common symptoms of a holiday illness consist of sickness, stomach cramps and diarrhoea. The Hotel management and tour operators often tell holidaymakers that these symptoms are a result of climate change, change in diet, too much alcohol or a virus brought into the hotel. However we deal with hundreds of cases each year, all of which are the end product of poor food and hygiene practices.
If you have suffered illness on holiday then you may be entitled to compensation.
