A British family who travelled to the AzuLine Hotel Coral Beach in Ibiza endured a nightmare holiday after contracting E. coli during their stay.
The Smith family, from Bishop Auckland in County Durham, reported falling âhorrificallyâ ill at the hotel. All four members of the family fell ill and their two daughters required hospital treatment for days.
The family had travelled to the 3 star AzuLine Hotel Coral Beach for eleven days in early June 2014. Just days into their holiday, they began suffering symptoms including sickness, stomach cramps, and diarrhoea.
Both two-year-old daughters were eventually diagnosed with haemolytic uraemia syndrome, which is a condition related to E. coli causing kidney failure due to a breakdown of red blood cells.
They were admitted to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Newcastle on their return to the UK, requiring dialysis to help their kidneys function.
The childrens father, Mr Smith, described the experience as their âworst nightmareâ. He stated: âThe last few weeks have been like our worst nightmare coming to life as we have had to watch our girls fight for their lives in hospital.
âThe last thing we imagined was that we would all fall so horrifically ill. We did notice that some of the food that should have been chilled was left at room temperature and some of it was undercooked, but we tried to be as careful as possible.
âWe just want answers about what caused the illness and to know that if the hygiene failings are found, steps are taking to rectify them and prevent anyone else suffering in the same horrible way as we have.â
Haemolytic Uraemia Syndrome (HUS) most commonly follows an infection such as stomach bug (gastroenteritis). The bug most commonly linked with HUS is E.coli which may be contracted as a result of consuming contaminated food or drinking water.
