Ongoing reports of illness have plagued the Cuban resort since 2014 with stricken guests claiming to have suffered from salmonella, scabies and gastric illness.

Alarmingly, recent reviews on TripAdvisor suggest that poor hygiene standards remain a common cause for concern amongst Hotel Playa Pesquero holidaymakers.

One guest who visited the Cuban resort in June 2016 stated:

“Hygiene is something that seriously needs addressing.

“Birds are eating from the buffet, which the staff are not clearing away after the birds have been on the food … Surely some kind of covers or cages could be created to prevent this!”

“[I] witnessed several chefs using the same cooking utensils for picking up raw fish then putting them in the raw chicken contaminating different food”.

The Manchester traveller adds that several of their fellow guests developed a “tummy bug”.
