Confirmed cases of “Cryptosporidium” at the Evenia Zoraida Park, Almeria

We have recently received enquiries from families who have suffered illness after staying at the Evenia Zoraida Park, Almeria.

The Evenia Zoraida Park is promoted by Thomas Cook amongst others. The 4 star all inclusive hotel overlooks the beach and is located approximately one kilometre from the resort centre. It offers a wide range of facilities including, two swimming pools, two buffet restaurants, Tapas bar and sauna.

We have been contacted by four families who holidayed together and were all affected by illness during their holiday. Stool samples have been tested and although all adult results were negative, regrettably two cases of cryptosporidium were confirmed amongst the children. More test results are currently awaited.

Cryptosporidium is a parasite, which can infect the bowel, leading to symptoms of diarrhoea and sickness. Young children are prone to contracting the illness and their symptoms can last up to two weeks. The parasite is often found in water, food, unclean surfaces or soil that has been infected by faeces. The most common method of transmission is water, either swimming pools or drinking water.

Although recent reviews of the hotel on TripAdvisor appear to be mainly positive, there are reviews of illness with one from last week stating  “Unfortunately on our last day we all came down with a bug and are still suffering now, almost a week later, not sure what from until confirmed by docs!”

This is not the only negative review, there are a several dating back to July 2014 with complaints of guests suffering from the “bug.”

One family from Crewe posted “we had a dreadful experience at this hotel. We suffered illness from the third day, my daughter was that poorly from this illness, which we believe was from the pool, she ended up in hospital on a drip, which was terrifying!!!”

The review went on “my mother in law was the only one out of our party who didnt become ill and she only went ankle deep in the pool.”

Others have also complained about the pool saying “the pools were never cleaned or checked during our stay.”

There were also complaints about the standard of food served. It was said to be “warm, never hot” and was often “left in service trays.”

Another party of eleven have also complained of falling ill at this resort and in their report they stated “seven out of eleven and many other guests were very sick. I suspect it was the food.”

Anne Thomson, Head of Travel Law at Your holiday Claims said: “Although the exact source of the illness has not been identified, the confirmed test result of the children speak for themselves.”

“It is essential that the Thomas Cook carry out a detailed investigation in to the cause of the illness at this property, as it appears this is not an isolated incident.”

“I am deeply saddened to read reports of long awaited holidays being ruined by illness. Holiday makers should not suffer due to failures in hygiene standards, whether the problem lies with the swimming pool or the water.”
