A mum whose two young boys suffered serious bouts of gastric illness following a holiday in Lanzarote has spoken about the familys ordeal following the settlement of two out of three of their cases.
Jackie Rushforth, from Mirfield, Yorkshire has won a four figure settlement from tour operator The Global Travel Group after the nightmare holiday at the Bluebay Lanzarote Hotel, formerly the Hotel Lanzarote Bay, in 2010 with her sons Oliver and Oscar.
The 42-year-old decided to pursue legal action after Oliver, now aged 10, was diagnosed with Salmonella and Campylobacter when he returned home. It took three weeks for the diarrhoea to stop. His seven-year-old brother Oscar â who was only four at the time â is still suffering from diarrhoea and stomach problems three years on.
Negotiations continue on behalf of Oscar. Jackie said: âWe should have happy memories about our trip rather than memories of the illness suffered.
âThe condition around the areas where food was being served was poor. I saw birds landing on some of the tables and cockroaches scurrying around. I felt strongly that the tour operator should be held to account. Standards should be improved so other families dont have to go through what we have.â
Tracy Stansfield, Holiday Illness Claims Solicitor at Farnworth Rose said: âIt is shocking to hear cases such as this where young children become seriously ill as a result of poor food hygiene in a holiday hotel. We are still reading reports of severe sickness at the hotel as recently as June this year, and anyone who has been affected should contact us as soon as possible.â
