British holidaymakers have recently been informed that they are to receive a pay out of a total of £1.7million from First Choice after almost 600 guests fell ill at a Turkish Resort.
The four-star Holiday Village resort in Sarigerme, Turkey received hundreds of complaints after 160 children and 435 adults fell ill during their stay at the hotel in 2009.
British holidaymakers have suffered from illnesses which have resulted in them requiring medical attention during their holiday, with many needing further treatment on their return home.
The majority of those affected suffered from gastric illnesses, with infections including Salmonella, Cryptosporidium, Campylobacter, and E-Coli. The infections were often contracted due to undercooked food and poor hygiene standards within the Holiday Village.
This was supported by reports describing food which was left uncovered and often re-heated for use during evening meals. The hotel also had a lack of hot water and British holidaymakers discovered the pool areas to be unclean, with many reporting faeces being found in the swimming pools.
One gentleman discovered that he had contracted Cryptosporidium during his stay at the Holiday Village in Turkey, said, âIt was awful, a real holiday from hell. I was crippled in the foetal position for the last couple of days of my holiday. I couldnt eat drink or sleep and it felt like someone was stabbing me in the stomach.
âI found out Ive got Irritable Bowel Syndrome and I have to be really careful now, I havent been abroad since and I dont know when I will go nextâ.
Cryptosporidium can often be found in contaminated water, food, and on unclean surfaces. Many of the largest outbreaks of cryptosporidiosis occur when drinking water becomes contaminated and outbreaks can also occur in improperly maintained swimming pools.

Anne Thomson, Head of Travel Law at Your Holiday Claims, commented, âAn outbreak which is as large as the one experienced at the Holiday Village in Turkey indicates a serious flaw in hygiene standards.
âWe have previously reported on outbreaks of illness at this hotel in November 2013, which appears to show that there are issues that still need to be addressed at the Holiday Village.â
