A father has suffered a horrific holiday accident after breaking his leg in six places on a Turkish water slide.
The injury occurred when he was catapulted into the wall of a swimming pool at the bottom of the slide.
Des Jarvis, 45, had travelled to the Didim Beach Resort in Turkey, with his girlfriend and their four children when he suffered the injuries. They had saved £5,500 in order to take their dream holiday together. However, it quickly descended into a nightmare as Mr Jarvis was forced to spend most of his holiday in hospital.
The injury required five operations, including removing part of his tibia, which has left one leg two inches shorter than the other. There was also serious concern that the leg may have to be amputated to guard against infection. Mr Jarvis is now pursuing a claim for compensation against First Choice, the provider of the Didim Beach Resort.
The accident abroad is now to be featured on the BBCs Holiday Hit Squad. Experts are to investigate the safety of the resorts slides. Many have suggested that the size of the pool is entirely insufficient to ensure the safety of those using the slides.
The holiday accident suffered by Mr Jarvis has left him unable to continue to work within his previous job as a window fitter. The operations he has undergone have resulted in a permanent limp and he still requires the use of crutches.
Mr Jarvis said: âI have lost two inches of my height off my right leg as they had to cut all the infected bone away and now my leg is in three pieces.
âMy life is a constant battle. My girlfriend has to work as my virtual carer, administering antibiotics and washing me. I cant go and play football with my son, or go out to parents evenings.
âThe holiday company have robbed me of my kids childhoods. I dont want anyone else to go through this hell.â
It has been reported that since Mr Jarvis accident, five others have suffered injuries on the same slides.
Tracy Stansfield, an experienced holiday claims solicitor at Your Holiday Claims, commented: âI am horrified to hear of the truly horrendous injuries suffered by this poor gentleman.
âReading the reports which suggest that the slide is not only still in use, but that others have suffered injuries, does raise serious concerns. We would hope that the recent media coverage will result in further investigation into the safety standards of the Didim Beach Resorts facilities.â
